The pathway

It's a long path of particular beauty located in the heart of the regional park, which connects two of the historic state forests of Gutturu Mannu: Is Cannoneris and Mount Nieddu. It crosses a wild and uncrowded area of the mountain, descending in the initial stretch (about 1 km from the start) and crossing for over 3 km the gorge of the Isca' and Calamixi (the most inland, wild and suggestive areas of the territory) until its end (at Punta Is Puxeddus) through a beautiful, but quite difficult, mule track, which runs along a watercourse, continuing along the stream and then going up in the heart of the Monte Nieddu area, to reach at the end of a challenging path, both for its length and for the necessary physical endurance, the buildings of Fo.re.s.t.a.s. Agency

Along the route the trail is connect with two other trails; in Su Paganu it meets with the D 212-A trail that, through a ring path, returns to the starting point. In Is Canargius instead, leaving the path towards Madau Monte Nieddu, it's possibile to continue along the D 212 path towards the locality Sa Galanza, in the municipality of Sarroch.

ADVICE AND KEY FEATURES

This path is particularly demanding and it is recommended only for trained and physically fit people since the total walking time exceeds 6 hours. Especially the stretch that crosses S'Isca de Calamixi is recommended for experienced hikers because of the presence of water streams with fords and passages in the gorge of the river, among the rocks, especially in the flood phases of rio S'Isca 'e Calamixi and of rio Is Canargius during the autumn and spring period.

Note: The trail is easier choosing not to walk it in its entirety, but making a ring using a stretch of the D 212-A trail.

The trail is long-distance and is divided into two main stages:

from Is Cannoneris to Is Canargius
from Is Canargius to medau Monte Nieddu.

TOTAL ELEVATION GAIN

In the main direction of the route, from Is Cannoneris to Monte Nieddu, the total uphill difference it below 800 meters, while, in the opposite direction, the total elevation gain is over 1200 meters.

GENERAL NOTICES

ATTENTION! some sections of the trail may be partially closed or hidden by vegetation, especially cistus, and that may make the trail difficult to pass especially for non-expert hikers without a GPS track. The path route is quite well visible and easy to walk, except for some stretches and gullies where several streams converge, especially half-way.

ATTENTION! This path due to the orographic conformation of the area of Gutturu Mannu, can become impassable, not fordable, or even dangerous, in case of heavy rains.
Along the way, especially at the bottom of the valley, there will be no telephone signal; for this reason it is recommended to not to venture alone, to be accompanied by experienced people, and to bring water supply.

GETTING THERE

From Cagliari, by car. Follow the S.S. 195 to Pula and then continue to Domus de Maria. At the entrance of the village follow the signs to Is Cannoneris, which will lead to a roundabout, on which take the first road on the right, paved for a first stretch, and then dirt road (about 18 km) to the buildings of the Service Center of the State Forest of Is Cannoneris. Leaving the buildings on the left, continue for about 50 meters until a picnic area, where there is the parking and starting point of the trail.

Roadbook

The first stretch, downhill, proceeds following what remains of an old cart track that leads to the Riu S'Isca 'and Calamixi stream river bed, surrounded by a thick woods.
