From Laveria Vecchia to Is Guardianus (D-514)

The virtual trailhead is at the nearby Laveria Vecchia (ore processing plant) of the San Giovanni mine, which can be reached on foot from Trail 511 or the variant 513/A. Alternatively, you can get on the trail by parking your car immediately after the Normann sign, along the tarmac road leading to the village and continuing on foot.
The trail starts off immediately uphill, departing from the track at an elevation of 120 m and entering the forest: the upward stretch joins with the municipal road that leads to Normann, where you will immediately see the ruins of the small church of San Giovanni Battista and the tunnel ‘de sa cresia’ or ‘della macchina’. The latter name derives from the steam engine that, until the advent of electricity, powered the extraction machinery of the Carolina shaft, installed in the Vittorio Emanuele tunnel.
On the way up to the village you will find many signs of its history: on the left some closed mine tunnels, with still some mine carts, on the right the remains of the tennis courts and the open-air cinema, reserved for managers and office workers. After about 100 m of tarmac road, take a forest path that climbs up to the ruins of the stables which still have the metal rings to which the mine working animals were tied. From here, the trail climbs under the holm oak forest and after a few dozen metres leads to the mining road that connects Normann with the San Giovanni mine without having to go by the main road. At this point, you will intersect Trail 512, which connects Normann to Seddas Moddizzis and Gonnesa via a very scenic route.
Continue on your trail (514) crossing the mining road in an easterly direction, paying attention to the route markings which, after a few hundred metres, will direct you onto a worksite road. Soon you will leave this too in order to follow a barely visible trail that runs clockwise around punta Is Ollastus passing under the large pit called ‘Massa Pozzo 4’. A clear sign of the 19th-century mining activity is immediately evidenced by a large stone base on which two different ropeway conveyors that transported ore to the ore processing plant of the San Giovanni mine are located. The presence of two ropeways suggests that they have served different ore processing plants over time. Everything around here reminds you that these were once intensely exploited mining areas.
WARNING (EE): We recommended not to leave the trail or unleash your dog, due to the presence of tunnels and open pits. The route, minimally traced to respect the characteristics of the place, is not dangerous but is fairly challenging and should therefore only be tackled by experienced hikers in good physical condition. The view is now expansive, showing the fascinating ways in which human activities transformed the natural landscape. You will see the outline of the Monteponi mine and a large part of that of San Giovanni.
After circling the Is Ollastus peak, the trail intercepts the dense maze of mining tracks that intersect at the Is Guardianus locality at 340 m asl. Our trail (514) ends right at the junction with Trail 512. You can take this latter trail to go back to Normann or continue towards the Santa Barbara well (Sa Macchina Beccia), Seddas Moddizzis (Villaggio Asproni), Monte Onixeddu and Gonnesa.
