The pathway

The trail is part of the Limbara massif which straddles the territories of the municipalities of Tempio Pausania, Calangianus and Berchidda. To plan your excursion, it is best to divide this mountain area into North Limbara (which includes Tempio Pausania and Calangianus) and South Limbara (which falls mainly within the territory of Berchidda).

Specifically, trail 407 falls on the North Limbara side and starts from the La Suliana locality (from the junction in trail 405) and ends (after crossing the starting point of trail 405 in the Li Reni locality) in Bucaticci, from where trail 401 branches off. This trail links trail 405 with trail 401 and leads to the Li Conchi locality (an area where you can find numerous tafoni, natural rock cavities used as shelters for flocks and probably, in ancient times, also as homes for shepherds) via trail 407A, which in turn links the Limbara trail network with the Sentiero Italia trail (Grand Italian Trail).

This trail was previously known as “route G” in the section up to Li Reni, and “route F” in the section from Li Reni up to Bucaticci del Limbara Nord, due to an old trail naming system that has now been replaced and updated, by installing the new signpost as per national standards, with the number “F-407” (trail 407 of the Sardinia Trail Network (RES) “F” area on the regional scale).

GETTING THERE

To get to the starting point of trail 407, from Tempio Pausania take the SS 392 to Oschiri. After crossing the Tempio Pausania - Palau railway line and coming to the junction for the Zona Industriale (industrial park), turn left towards Calangianus. Follow the road for just over 1 km until you reach the three fountains, where many local people collect spring water, and turn right onto the local road. Continue along it for about 4 km, leaving the first junction you come across to your right (after about 1.1 km). Then leave the second junction you come across to your right (after about 2.5 km), continuing for a further 1.5 km to the third junction (elevation about 700 m asl) where trail 405 begins in the Lu Paggiolu locality in a car-parking area. After walking along trail 405 for about 600 m (having left the junction with trail 406 to your right), you will find the junction with trail 407 on your left at la Suliana locality.

Useful informations

In 2022 and part of 2023, the Forestas Agency, in cooperation with the Sassari CAI, carried out checks and maintenance activities on the trail, including signposts and markers.

WARNING: The trail signs are being replaced.

WARNING: ROUTE IS PENDING REGISTRATION. The trail will be officially registered in the Sardinia Trail Network (RES) registry after all the existing trail signs (belonging to the old classification system) are replaced.

Tips and recommendations for enjoying the trail

Hiking time and the elevation profile change in the two directions of travel: ascending to Bucaticci (1082 m asl) the absolute elevation gain is 356 m, with a total ascent of 391 m.

Alternatively, travelling in the other direction and therefore starting from the Bucaticci locality, the path is entirely downhill, except for small local uphill stretches.

Some parts of the route are not covered by cell service; so it is best not to venture out alone and to be accompanied by experienced people.

In severe weather, in light of the area’s terrain these trails can be exposed to significant hydrogeological hazards. Vegetation regrowth might obscure the path in some places: it is best to have detailed maps and/or a carefully calculated GPS route before setting off on your hike.

Roadbook

After parking your car in the Lu Paggiolu area at an elevation of 690 m asl, near the spring water fountain with the same name, head south following trail 405. After walking about 300 m, leave trail 406 to the right and continue for another 300 m until you reach trail 407 on your left.
