Case Marganai - Carbonaia (D-320A)
The pathway
Roadbook
From the car park at the Linasia botanic garden , where you encounter trail 324, you turn back along the road to Mamenga to reach the start of the path. Take a left in the woods along a mule track leading slightly uphill, keeping the area of Case Marganai to your left. A gentle downhill section leads to the open space at the Forestas site, where you encounter the intersection with trail 321. You skirt along the left side of the clearing, passing by a little house and gradually walk downhill, entering a pretty woodland.
A little to the right of the trail, near the crossroads with trail 322, you come across one of the many charcoal-making sites in the forest, evidence of the time in history when the riches of the forest were chopped down and transformed. Here, the Agency workers have skilfully reconstructed the charcoal-making process and visitors can in fact observe a charcoal pile, with a cross-section showing what it looked like when it was ready to be set alight. After visiting the charcoal-making site, turn left at the crossroads described above, heading east.
You pass two ravines which are a reminder of the karst origin of the area. In this section, the route is very close to trail 324. You head back up slightly to the left, intersecting this trail on a level stretch, near the dirt road which, if followed on the left, leads to the Marganai heliport. You then cross the dirt road and continue through the wood slightly uphill, passing some rocks in a lovely holm oak wood.
At the top of the small climb you come to Gruttoni Mauris, named after a fantastic rock shelter at an exceptionally scenic spot. To reach it, turn off to the right for a few metres at a fork (signposted). The panoramic viewpoint offers splendid views over the valley of Reigraxius, Campu Spina and the distant massif of Linas. You return to the main path, proceeding left and again encountering trail 324 which you cross near a dirt road. A short walk takes you back to the start.
