In 1983, by decree of the Regional Environment Defense Councilor, the permanent wildlife protection oasis in the Barigadu lands, in the municipalities of Neoneli and Nughedu Santa Vittoria, was established, taking the name of the "Assai" Oasis, from the name of the area.
The fauna present in the Oasis is of great scientific interest. In fact, in addition to the fallow deer and the Sardinian deer, numerous wild boars are present and, among the carnivores, the wild cat and the marten; among the nesting bird species, we recall some Sardinian-Corsican endemisms, such as the sparrowhawk, the great spotted woodpecker, the coal tit, the black bunting.
The rare and elusive blue rock thrush, the jay, the raven, the Sardinian partridge, and the wood pigeon are also present. Recently, after many years of absence, the golden eagle has returned to nest in the area; this is undoubtedly a positive sign that makes us understand that the wildlife-environmental situation is evolving towards increasingly stable balances.
