Muru Mannu Peak (942 meters above sea level) is among the highest peaks on the western slope of the Linas mountain range, bordering the Oridda valley and the Marganai area.
The first name probably derives from the profile marked by a granite vein clearly visible along its north-south ridge. Also known by locals as "schina de Muru Mannu" or "Sa canoa," its slopes and the surrounding valleys give rise to the renowned waterfall of the same name, the largest in the entire Linas-Marganai region and probably in all of Sardinia. Punta Muru Mannu (942 metri slm) è tra le cime più elevate del versante occidentale del Linas, al confine con la valle di Oridda e il Marganai.
General info
Linas Mount massif is a continuous discovery of ever-changing natural environments, including rugged peaks, deep gorges, woods, Mediterranean scrub, streams, and waterfalls. One of these, surrounded by imposing granite walls, in the territory of Gonnosfanadiga, will remain etched in your memory for its dizzying final drop of over 70 meters: it's the Muru Mannu waterfall. Together with the stream that generates it, it owes its name to the rocky ridge from which the watercourse springs. Almost at the end of its journey – which originates at an altitude of a thousand meters – the channel encounters a sudden drop in elevation: first, it makes a few small jumps, and finally the most impressive one, granting Muru Mannu the primacy on the Island. At the end of the leap, the stream generates a small lake surrounded by holm oaks and strawberry trees, then continues downstream, giving life to other small waterfalls, finally joining the Rio Linas and forming the Rio Cannisoni.
To reach this spectacle of nature, you will walk an enchanting path in the woods, which at times opens onto bright clearings, then narrows through gorges immersed in holm oaks and eucalyptus trees, while holly and strawberry trees accompany your progress alongside the two streams that furrow the Linas. From time to time, traces of recent past frequentations appear: charcoal pits, huts, and abandoned sheepfolds make the landscape even more evocative. You will immerse yourself in the character of a fairy tale or a fantasy story when you occasionally have to ford the streams, at their intersection point they show small waterfalls and lakes. Finally, following the Rio Muru Mannu upstream, on the left, you will arrive at the waterfall.
