In the Barbagia region, nestled in the Supramonte, surrounded by dense woods and splendid oleanders, we find the most imposing natural canyon in Italy and Europe: the Gola di Su Gorroppu. This is one of the most enchanting and impressive symbols of the Sardinian mountains. A silence and a wild nature welcome the visitor among the impressive walls that in some places exceed 400 meters in height."
The gorge, whose bottom is covered with large, smooth, white boulders, is a deep wound between the Supramonte of Orgosolo and that of Urzulei, a very narrow cleft carved over millennia by the waters of the Rio Flumineddu; The river continues beyond the gorge, opening into tiny lakes and flowing out down towards the Oddoene valley where it feeds several springs. It can be reached on foot, after a two-hour walk, following the path along the Rio Flumineddu that leads to the gorge, in a landscape of great beauty. The recommended period for the hike is spring and autumn.
