Seddas Moddizzis: Asproni Village
In the green heart of Sulcis Iglesiente, there is a mine, a story, a village, a dream of rebirth that are just waiting to be discovered!
At the heart of this uncontaminated microcosm, on the Seddas Moddizzis plateau, between Iglesias and Gonnesa, in the early 1900s, Engineer Giorgio Asproni, director and future owner of the nearby mine rich in lead and zinc, built a small village that still bears his name today. The village was born as a mining hamlet of the municipality of Iglesias, but soon acquired a rural connotation as well, experiencing its maximum development until the early 1930s. Since then, a slow decline began, which, following alternating events, ended with its abandonment in the 1970s. The village was equipped with everything: from the store to the elementary school, from the church to the infirmary, from the technical offices to the management. During its long life, it hosted a community of more than 250 people and specifically, in addition to the engineer's family, the families of mine employees and managers and the numerous families of miners, sharecroppers, breeders and woodcutters employed by Asproni's farm. Today it is a private property and since the end of 2020 it is coming back to life after a very long period of total abandonment during which the small village was looted and stripped of everything, effectively becoming a "ghost village". The redevelopment project underway starts from a long, patient and passionate historical reconstruction carried out through archival research and draws from the meticulous collection of many precious testimonies, still in progress. In recent years, the buildings and all the outdoor spaces once intended for sociality have been reclaimed and definitively cleared of debris and rubble and the first conservative restoration site of the Former Mining Management, once the beating heart of the village itself, has started. To discover the details of its long history, listen to the anecdotes related to stories of lived life and learn about the details of the rebirth project by walking on the ancient cobblestones brought back to light, the Asproni Village is open all year round for guided tours by reservation through a dedicated section of the official website www.villaggiominerarioasproni.it.
