Use your map

If you have a good sense of direction and you know at least a few places in the territory, you can also get around using just maps without the aid of a compass.

First, you need to identify a few known points in the territory (villages, peaks, valleys....). Next identify the corresponding place names on the map. Finally, laying the map flat on the ground, you need to turn it round to align it with its actual equivalents on the ground, and with NORTH indicated by the compass.
